Activity 2 UNDERSTANDING SUMMARY AND REDUCTION
ALGEBRAL FORM
There are so many everyday problems that involve addition and subtraction of algebraic
forms, whether you realize it or not. For example in the world of banking, trading in the
market, and the production of a company. The following is an example of a problem in the
trading world.
In algebraic form, addition and subtraction operations can only be performed on similar
terms. Add or subtract the coefficients on like terms.
Problem 2.1 Addition and subtraction of algebraic forms in
everyday life
Pak Madhuri is a successful rice wholesaler in East Dempo village. Mr. Madhuri received
orders from the Pasean and Waru market traders on the same day. Pasean market traders
ordered 15 sacks of rice, while Waru market traders ordered 20 sacks of rice. Only 17 sacks of
rice are currently available in Pak Madhuri's warehouse. Let x be the mass of each sack of rice.
Express in algebraic form:
a. The total rice ordered to Mr. Madhuri.
b. The remaining rice in Pak Madhuri's warehouse only fulfills the orders of the Pasean
market traders.
c. There is a shortage of rice that Mr. Madhuri needs if he only fulfills the orders of the
Waru market traders.
Solution:
Let's observe:
a. The total rice ordered to Mr. Madhuri is 15x + 20x or 35x kilograms of rice.
b. If Mr. Madhuri only fulfills the orders of the Pasean market traders, then the remaining
rice is 2 sacks of rice or 2x kilograms of rice.
c. The shortage of rice that Mr. Madhuri needs to fulfill the orders of the Waru market
traders is 3 sacks of rice or (−3x) kilograms of rice. (a negative sign indicates a
deficiency).
In the introductory story there are operations between two forms of algebra, namely:
1. Addition (15x) + (20x) = 35x
2. Subtraction (17x)-(15x) = 2x
