23rd April National Sovereignity and Children’s Day
This year is the centenary of the23rd April National Sovereignity and Children’s Day.
Turkish people are honoured and proud that Atatürk was such an intelligent leader. He did
everything to modernise the Turkish nation. This is one of them.
On this day, they celebrate the opening of Turkish Grand National Assembly and Children’s
Day. Ottoman Empire had used sultanate as a regime. But this regime didn’t give people
rights and they did whatever sultan said. Also there wasn’t superiority of the law and
there wasn’t an additional system that represented the public. Because there wasn’t
anything good about this regime, it had to be changed with a new regime which allowed
people to be represented and be judged with courts not with the sultan. First of all, there
had to be an assembly to establish the new regime. This day was the first step of the
proclamation of the republic. In addition to this, Atatürk gave this day to children as a
present. “Children are a new beginning of tomorrow. They are the successors of the
future.”
