Demystifying the College Admissions Essay
Instructor: Marc Thompson
Marc works as an independent educational consultant with
College Advising Team, a company he co-founded. He left his
career in the high-tech financial services industry to pursue
his passion for helping others find the path to their best life.
Once a part-time application reader for the Undergraduate
Admissions Office at Stanford University, he brought the
insight he gained there to a non-profit extracurricular
program where, as a volunteer mentor, he helped scores of
high school seniors develop their college application essays
for more than a decade.
The personal statement essay is an area of most college
applications where students can use their voice to explain,
expand, or share details of their life to admissions
representatives.
In this workshop, we will review how these essays fit into the
overall admissions process, address how to break down an essay
prompt and determine what is being asked, discuss the
differences between writing for admissions vs. writing for a class,
and learn how brainstorming can help make the whole process
more efficient and engaging.
