When I had first thought of the question "What would I change at
GEMS Founders?", my answer was clear as day. I wanted to change its
environment. I wanted to make room for appreciation of the vast diversity
it withholds. I wanted students to feel heard. Their identities, history and
personality may have felt overshadowed by the cultural majorities that
surrounded them. And when I had started GFS Youth, their freedom to
express themselves and their culture was no longer suppressed.
Admittedly, I was hesitant about taking on such an extensive project. One
that would make me sacrifice free time and cause a drastic change in my
daily life. That hesitancy, however, was diminished when I reminded
myself of my team's vision. The sacrifices were worth it when I would
come to experience such inspiring passion from my teammates. Passion
about educating, writing and raising cultural awareness to appreciate those
around us. I have never been more proud to say that GFS Youth is entirely
student-led. I envisioned a team where each member felt safe, free and
treasured. This experience, for each student involved, was priceless and
has surely paved the way for success at GFS. I hope that, come next year,
I will get to know more of the amazing talents within our school who are
passionate about cultural advocacy. I hope the GFS Youth family grows
even bigger, and inspires even more.
