Tagging alongside teammate Ciancurulo, Tonus began to dice the switchbacks on lap one of moto one around tenth place. Battling, Tonus entered the whoops and crossed lap one in the same spot he had started, in the mix of the lead pack. Being in 10th, Tonus was one of the first to deal with the early
aggression of Cooper Webb. Fortunately, Arnaud held his own for the majority of the first half. Leading Cooper around the Washington circuit, the two pushed forward with Tonus reaching 8th and then up to 7th. There, he was finally passed by Webb in the trees and pushed to 8th. Quickly, Tonus’ movement backwards got even worse as he was passed by Plessinger and then Ciancurulo to find 10th. Getting around Oldenburg, Tonus was back into 9th and shortly after reached 8th
by getting around a fading Mitchell Harrison. Behind 7th-placed Plessinger, Tonus dealt with heat from Justin Hill, who also got around Harrison, and was in a three-way duel for 7th. All three staying put as the battle waged on, Tonus didn’t complete his attack until there was a mere six minutes left as both he and Hill got by Plessinger. Luckily, with only a little time left, Tonus held off the hometown hero of Hill and finished 7th behind fellow Monster Energy rider Ciancurulo.
