A near holeshot sat RD5 up for an ideal event in the Calfornia sun, as he prepared to soak up some rays and enjoy the Memorial Day festivities. Taking the lead from Canard around half a
lap in, Dungey was all smiles and preparing to sprint from the feverish crowd behind him. All seemed to be well until a screeching Suzuki 450 began to creep into the eardrum of the KTM cap-
tain around the halfway point; it was Ken Roczen. With cornerman Aldon Baker preaching this week’s vocabulary word of “comfort” in the KTM pit, Dungey seemed to take its true definition in a literal sense. He began to find a pace that had a bit of complacency and was quickly dethroned from his horse, as Roczen would run him wide around the nine minute mark. Franti- cally trying to maintain a pace that the Deutschland native set, Dungey watched as the points lead began to tally up. All seemed to be over until the crowd began to gasp and yell with bloody cry, as Dungey once again took over the lead. Roczen’s bike began to malfunction and RD5 was first to take advantage. A win is a win in the record books, and Dungey stayed true to his backbone of consistency, claiming victory heading into moto two.
