Hayes steadily improved throughout practice and ended up putting his Yamaha R1 in fifth place on the starting grid for the first race. He didn’t get the best jump off the line and he found himself battling for position outside of the top five. Hayes pushed hard on the opening laps in order to progress
back through the field, but he encountered some unfortunate circumstances when Kyle Wyman tucked the front end directly in front of him as he crested the hill coming out of turn ten. Hayes had nowhere
to go and he collided with his fellow Yamaha rider, sending both of them tumbling into the gravel trap. The Mississippian was able to remount his machine in relatively quick fashion and put forth his best effort to claw his way back up to fourteenth position, salvaging some points in the championship. The second race was a much more positive result for the four-time champion -- he was able to maintain his place in the top five as the pack ascended into the first corner, and he immediately found himself in a dust up with the Kawasaki of Bobby Fong. The two of them battled back and forth for a couple of laps which allowed the top three to separate themselves, but Hayes eventually secured fourth position. The Yamaha rider turned some of his best laps of the weekend once he found himself with a clear track, but he wasn’t able to track down the leaders, and he ended up bringing the R1 home in fourth position.
