The twenty-three year old struggled with an uncompetitive motorcycle during the 2016 MotoAmerica season, but he’s back in action this year on a CBR1000 with support from American Honda that will undoubtedly put him towards the front of the pack.
The rider out of San Diego worked his way into the Superpole session and managed to lay down a solid lap time which put him in eleventh place on the grid. Gagne was able to maintain his starting position into the first corner as he settled into eleventh place early on, but he wasn’t satisfied as he immediately began to charge forward. The Genuine Broaster Chicken Honda rider carved his way through the field like an electric knife one lap after another -- making some quick moves and taking advantage of some carnage at the front of the field to eventually move into fifth position. Considering it was his first competitive outing on the new machine, Gagne was stoked on the result and optimistic heading into the second race, but an unfortunate mechanical issue caused him to park the bike after just one lap.
