SENIOR 40+
JO MOTOCROSS
What does it mean to be considered dominant , in regards to sports? Is it winning championship after championship? Race after race? But what about leading every lap? How should that be classified? Supreme? Almighty? Whatever you would like to categorize it as, list John Grewe’s name write beside it. As this man was seemingly on a mission to destroy everything in sight at the 2017 Winter Olympics, whether it be motocross, or Supercross format. Coming into the Senior 40+ class, he knew the competition would be a little more “in-depth”, but his preconceived notion of obliteration was in full-force as he lined the gate for the opening curtain call of moto one. As he blistered off the line, rounding the first corner with front wheel in the air, he would hit the slight chicane and drop into the Gator Pit, clicking up
a gear. Cresting the next hill, he would launch into the air, throttle already twisted, and the back wheel gyrating as it dug into this hard, rock-like base of topsoil. Greg Pamart had made his way into second, moving around John Bowlin on lap three, and Barry Carsten was steadily chuggling along in third, looking to make a statement on the podium. Although these guys were giving their best effort, the number 70, Rockford, Michigan native was doing his thing out front, never once breaking a sweat. He would cross the line in first, with Pamart, and Barry Carsten taking third. As
it came time for the runoff, many in attendance were pondering if Grewe could keep his string
of dominance. And that he could, this time not only dipping below sub 2:00 times, but hitting a jaw-dropping 1:56 on the third lap. Meanwhile, Carsten and Pamart were playing a little game of position swap in second and third, with Pamart taking the upper hand in the closing moments. Grewe remained out front, never flashly, and almost seemingly let the bike brake for itself. He was riding a gear taller than most, lugging the machine around. The technique, although a bit old fashioned, worked wonders for the rampant Rockford racer. As Grewe would jump the finish line stripe, his number 70 Kawasaki would cost
to a halt. Pamart, and Carsten were quickly there for congratulations, and Grewe would head back to the trailer, preparing his championship speech. This scenario had become all too familiar, and he hoped the momentum would continue going into 2018.
