Considering the previous past that “Lightning” Kobusch and his Super Mini have, there’s
no confusion when looking at the results that the previous champion put up in Wortham, Texas this year. In both the Super Mini 1 and Super Mini 2 classes, Lance never placed off the box. In the beginning of heat one for the Mini 1 class, Kobusch started in 2nd but fell back
finishing 3rd as the top three riders stayed within four seconds for all five laps. In an even tighter moto two, Kobusch and the #325 of Robertson remained 2nd and 1st respectively the entire moto, with Kobusch missing a last lap win by .546 seconds while the entire campground gnawed at their fingertips. Turning up the noise, Kobusch came out swinging in heat two with a 2nd place ride all moto, again missing out on first, this time by .489 seconds. With frustration mounting, Kobusch cranked the volume for moto two, determined to walk away with a win and that he did, in commanding fashion. Consistently holding his position for the moto, the Missouri boy raced to victory ahead of Swoll and Jo Shimoda. Still a close race, Lightning redeemed the start of the season and takes the title with a smile as he’s again demonstrated Super Mini supremacy in 2016.
With the title locked up, Kobusch’s last wish before the week ended was to be a Schoolboy contender. In the ruthless heat one, Lance and the field remained rather stagnant with Pierce Brown stealing the show. From lap two on, Brown gapped the next rider by 11 seconds, while Kobusch hung back in 5th nearly 30 seconds behind. With the 5th, Lance qualified for the second moto out straight out of the heat race in the unique format. It was here the week took a turn for the worst and the #99 posted a rather bleak moto finish of 19th. Not necessarily a bad race as the rider worked his way up from 28th in the short six lap main event style moto two. Finishing 15th overall, Lance finished the week on a sour note but the flashes of brilliance mean the rider is still gaining confidence on the two stroke 125.
