At what could be considered his home track, Webb came out swinging to post the fastest time in the first qualifying session. Although he improved his time in the second session, Ciancurulo edge him out for the top spot and Cooper was forced to take 2nd to the starting gate and the second best
gate pick. Hoping for the same type of day that he used two years ago to earn his first professional victory, Cooper Webb needed a start in moto one and he almost got it. Coming around in 6th place on the first lap, the class settled in to race pace without much movement up front. Five minutes in, Webb took over 5th around McElrath and then put in work for 4th which took nearly eight minutes to earn. In 4th and twelve seconds back, Cooper gets by Ciancurulo as the Monster Energy rider went down in a corner as the race reached the final minutes. Shortly after, Webb moved into second around Jordan Smith and was left to chase Joey Savatgy to the checkered flag. A solid ride in no>rm>al Webb fashion following a mediocre start that clearly made a statement to the rest of the class heading into moto two.
