Page 42 - Taming Your Gremlin A Surprisingly Simple Method for Getting Out of Your Own Way (Rick Carson)_Neat
P. 42
Your skin has more nerve endings than any other part of your body. It is
waterproof and tough. Even when the top layer gets rubbed off, which it
does constantly (you’ll shed about thirty disgusting pounds of dead skin in
this lifetime), it is replaced by living layers below. You exist within the
boundary defined by this relatively thin organ. (It’s about two millimeters
thick in most places.)
Your skin is a miraculous organ. It is surrounded by an energy field, and
it is so sensitive that you can feel certain properties within your
environment without actually coming in contact with them. Equally
amazing is that while your skin is a sensitive receptor, it is also a boundary,
a vibrating boundary that separates you from all else.
From within the boundary defined by your skin you are peering out at
these words. Within that boundary you are interpreting them. Within it you
are breathing. From within the boundary defined by your skin you get
bummed out, wrought up, and turned on. From within the boundary defined
by your skin you have every experience you have in this life. Events occur
around you, but your experience of those events occurs within the boundary
defined by your skin.
In the next few days, experiment with noticing your skin. Just be aware
of it as a sensitive receptor and as a boundary within which you exist.
BREATHE, DAMMIT, BREATHE
In chapter I we acknowledged the indefinable, infinite power that is the
essence of the natural you, and we labeled it life. Whatever we call it, one
thing is for sure: when it leaves your body, even your best friends won’t
want to hang with you for any length of time. That infinite force powers the
finite body within which you live and via which you are attending to these
words:
Your physical body and this life force have come together to form the
entity that answers to your name. They are joined by your breath.
Breathing is worth noticing and appreciating.
