A New York City woman has been indicted in con- nection with a scheme where she allegedly married 10 times over an 11-year period without ever getting a divorce.
Liana Barrientos is charged with two felony counts of filing a fake instrument. She pleaded not guilty Friday in the Bronx.
The charges are in con- nection with an applica- tion for a marriage license and the signed marriage license itself from 2010. The groom was a man named Salle Keita, whom she web March 4, 2010, accord- ing to the indictment.
But, authorities say that was far from the only groom. She is believed to be currently married to four people and at one time she was married to eight of them at the same time.
According to a criminal complaint, the 39-year- old woman allegedly obtained two of the mar-
riage licenses in the Bronx. It says the others were obtained in Westchester County and Long Island. The first one allegedly was obtained in 1999.
Her Facebook page claims that she works at St. Barnabas Hospital and is originally from the Dominican Republic.
She also claims to work for ARC XVI Senior Center in Ft. Washington, which pro- vides food, transporta- tion and other services to seniors.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and Homeland Security investigators are involved with the case to see if the mar- riages were simply to help people stay in the United States. Seven of the men are from so- called "red-flagged" countries, which include Egypt, Turkey, Georgia, Pakistan and Mali.
One of the grooms was deported to Pakistan fol- lowing an investigation by the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Barrientos left court late Friday morning with her lawyer and her niece. If convicted she would face up to four years in prison.
Fox 5 learned that police arrested Barrientos and her niece just after they left court. The NYPD said they walked through the exit gate of the sub- way station at 149th Street and Grand Concourse without pay- ing the fare. Authorities charged them with theft of service and criminal trespass.
These are the marriages cited in the indictment:
