first century, some observers have noticed a change in the way that artists

function within their society and changes to the way they are perceived by the
wider community. The most perceptive of the commentators have rediscovered

notions about craft and art that craftspeople and artists held thirty or forty, and
even fifty, years ago. Many of the craftspeople and craft artists who were part of

the twentieth century movement were able to put into effect the ideas and live by
the ideals they espoused. As we shall see, they may have been ahead of their

time.
