 CLT aims to
fill the timber gap
WITH THE LAST of the European technicians out of MIQ and final commissioning of the plant underway last month, Red Stag’s new wood processing plant in Rotorua should be up and running by the time you read this story.
The Red Stag Wood Solutions plant will add 5% to the capacity of the New Zealand wood processing sector, says Red Stag group CEO, Marty Verry, and will be able to supply material for around two thousand dwelling units.
Rather than stick timber, the factory will produce large Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, formed by gluing three, five or seven layers of H1.2 FSC timber laid crossways over each other.
These rigid panels, which in Red Stag’s case can measure up to 16.5 x 4.5m (over 74m2), are then precision cut by CNC machines in the factory for assembly on-site.
A panel of this size weighs 4.6 tonnes (an equivalent precast concrete panel would weigh 22.5 tonnes), and as a bonus sequesters 8 tonnes of carbon and will have displaced 10 tonnes of CO2 production.
With the supply of flooring materials such as joists, I-beams and flooring panels experiencing supply problems in recent months, Red Stag expects the building community will be quick to take up its CLT mid-floors, which drop into place to provide a finished platform on which to construct the next level.
At a cost of $50 million, part-funded by a $15 million loan from the Provincial Growth Fund, the new CLT factory is co-located with Red Stag’s Rotorua sawmill, said to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and will employ 40 people initially, rising to 80 over time.
Meanwhile, Red Stag Timber is also flexing to help with the timber shortage by pulling back uncommitted supply from export markets and “squeezing out” more hours and capacity from its sawmill for clients, including ITM, PlaceMakers, Mitre10 NZ and independents.
What’s more, with demand high due to the current timber shortage, plans for the further expansion of both the mill and CLT factory are also being brought forward.
