P. 8

Text descriptions serve to create mental images for readers, establish

a context and elevate a mood that evoke emotional responses from various

readers. An effective descriptive text gives the reader a better sense of the

subject. Writing descriptions adds to the believability of an experience,

enhances understanding of a difficult concept, and also transports a reader

to another world. In other words, description has the function of not only

displaying what is visible through the senses but also serves to create a

context that allows the reader to participate in the writing.

                   2. Concept of Descriptive Essay

There are two classic approaches to descriptive essays, namely

                    personal essays and formal descriptions.

                       a. Personal Essay

Here the writer needs to describe an experience using feelings

and responses. This work is able to evoke empathy in the reader. It can

also be unclear and disorganized. If you want to write a good personal

essay, you should try to focus only on those aspects that best describe

the author's own experiences. Don't shy away from clear, compelling

language in this type of assignment. Some examples of personal essay

                      topics might be:

                      • Describes the experience of swimming in the blue sea in summer

                      • Describes the author's favorite films and their impact on the author
