Page 13 - SB-Little Prince
P. 13
Not long thereafter, while going through the countryside on an outing, the Little Prince noticed several boys about his own age shooting arrows at a target. It was a skill much used in the kingdom, not only for hunting but in defending the kingdom from invaders.
The Little Prince however, being of royal birth, had never had occasion to shoot an arrow from a bow. He halted the royal caravan and stood on the side of the road watching the boys take aim at the target. Although they were young, even younger than the Little Prince, they were quite accurate in their shooting.
After watching the boys take several turns shooting at the target, the Little Prince walked over and demanded to be given the best bow and best arrows. The young boys, knowing with whom they were dealing, gave over the best bow and arrows to him.
The Little Prince proceeded to take aim and shoot at the target. The arrow flew wildly off course and landed in an adjacent field. His second shot was no better and his third arrow landed next to a farmer’s wagon startling a dog sleeping under it. The poor animal woke with such a start that it went yelping and barking through the adjacent field. The shooting was comically bad and the poor yelping dog was just too much. The young boys burst out laughing. The Little Prince threw the bow and remaining arrows to the ground and stomped them with his feet.
