While walking toward the Great Hall one day, the Little Prince noticed some children playing with a young dog. The dog would “fetch” and “roll over” and obey many commands. The Little Prince walked over and watched them playing with the dog for several minutes. He then demanded that the dog come to him. Seeing an unfamiliar face calling him, the dog did not respond.
This angered the Little Prince and he began to yell at the dog to come to him. His yelling and waving of his arms frightened the dog, which shied away from the Little Prince even more. The dog’s behavior enraged the Little Prince and he went up to the dog and yanked its ears. The dog cried out in pain and snapped at him. Before the Little Prince could strike out, the dog hurried to crawl under a fence and was gone.
The Little Prince yelled at the children and said that they had a stupid dog. He was very angry and told himself, “I must have things go my way. That dog should have come when I called.” The other children tried to explain that the dog just did not understand the Little Prince’s commands. The children explained that if the Little Prince would be patient and practice with their dog, as they had in the past, the dog would respond to his commands.
But the Little Prince did not want to hear that. “That would take forever! It should have responded to me the first time,” shouted the Little Prince.
