So no matter how well you explain how to keep their balance on the bike you got them for Christmas, your child will fall off, get frustrated and “never want to do this again.”
Encourage them to pay attention by first getting their attention. Keep the instructions simple and tell it to them, ‘with a smile in your voice’. You should have them repeat your instructions to you to insure that they do understand (correct any misunderstandings... nicely).
Encourage them and praise them when they do follow directions. Point out when they have not followed directions and what could be the possible consequences. The skills of Paying Attention and Following Directions are skills they will use all of their lives.
