Paul’s mother explained that the humans at the zoo wanted the young pandas to return to the forest. In this way, there would be more pandas in the wild. But the adult pandas would remain in the zoo.
She told me how the humans who worked at the zoo had spent a lot of time helping the older pandas learn the skills of survival in the wild. Now these adult pandas were teaching the youngsters these same skills.
Without the help of the human teachers, many of the older pandas would not know what to teach the youngsters. “You know”, said Paul’s mother, “living in the wild is much harder and more dangerous than living in the zoo.”
I knew that Paul’s mother was correct. As you grow up, life does get more difficult. But for these young pandas, life in the wild was not only difficult, it was dangerous. I did not tell Paul’s mother, but I knew another animal that also lives in the panda’s forest ...tigers
