Paul’s mother now spoke with me about her concern for Paul. She told me, “Paul is very smart but he likes to play too much. He is not paying attention to his lessons and is too interested in the human visitors. He is always trying to get them to laugh and throw him treats.”
I had to agree with Paul’s mother. But I told her that I had seen a lot of human children who were like Paul. They did not pay attention in their school either. They were too interested in playing and failed to learn very important lessons.
“Do they not know how to find the right kind of bamboo or how to make a comfortable place to sleep,” asked Paul’s mother.
I then realized that Paul’s mother knew very little about humans except what she saw in the zoo. “Humans,”
I said, " are very strange and interesting creatures."
