Worksheet
The Old Man suggested that the Young Man make musket balls out of the lead. A good question at this point is, “Did the Old Man have any reason to suggest that he make musket balls other than he knew that the Young Man needed them and was just trying to be helpful?”
We want the children to respond that the Old Man knew that the Young Man needed them and that he did not have a negative reason for making the suggestion. Being able to see a situation without it being colored by our own irrational beliefs is very difficult. Although this is an obviously benevolent suggestion, we are trying to introduce the concept of evaluating guidance for both its value and the motivation of the person making the suggestion.
Because the Young Man told himself that he had tried this suggestion and had failed, his emotions would be negative like anger or frustration, and he would not try and make the musket balls (Thumbs Down behavior).
1. What did the Young Man tell himself when the old man suggested he use the lead to make bullets?
“I have tried that before and it never works out good, so why even try.”
2. What kind of thinking is that ? Stinky Thinking.
3. How did he feel?
He felt angry and frustrated.
4. What was his behavior?
He refused to even consider the suggestion of using the lead to make bullets.
