Worksheet
In this story worksheet, the children get to practice their ability to come up with “rational cognitive coping messages .” They get an opportunity to change the situation’s outcome, by changing the Young Man’s thinking.
Your child may be able to say: The Young Man could have told himself, “I have tried before and failed but that does not mean I can’t do it right this time. Maybe the Old Man will help me or I can find someone else to help me learn to do it correctly. Since I don’t have any musket balls now, I’ve got nothing to lose.” Any rational self-statement devised by the children, who would prompt the Young Man to try to make the musket balls, is good.
1. What more constructive things could the Young Man have told himself when the Old Man suggested he use the lead to make bullets?
It might work this time, I’ve got nothing to lose by trying.
2. What kind of thinking is that? Good Thinking.
3. How would he feel if he told himself something better? Confident and calm.
4. What might be his behavior?
He would have been willing to try and make bullets.
