Page 38 - G-Gold to Lead
P. 38
Worksheet
In this worksheet, the Old Man is suggesting that the Young Man use the lead to make a fishing net. The Young Man will refuse because he is not familiar with making a net. Fear of the unfamiliar, an unwillingness to deal with the frustration inherent in any new task are self limiting emotions.
They are based on irrational beliefs that can become so habitual and automatic that we are unaware of their existence. We will gape in amazement at others who will accept any challenge and endure hours of practice to become proficient in a task with no true understanding that it is their cognitive coping repertoire which makes this possible, not any mysterious “gift” or special “character trait.”
You want the children to recognize the Young Man’s limiting self- message, “I have never done that before and it will be too difficult.” You want them identify the typical irrational ideas, which cause all of us to not attempt a task no matter how important, “It will be too hard,” “It will be a waste of time” and so on. The hope is that the children will in time begin to recognize that their “guessing” about what might happen is “Limiting” and should be rejected. They must learn that without trying, there is no potential for progress and they will never experience success.
