Still the man screamed and the Young Man decided to help. He went down the creek bank, found a long branch and held it out to the man. The man grabbed the branch and the Young Man pulled him to the safety of the bank.
The man he had rescued was very old indeed. He had a white beard, a tattered hat and a well-worn, long brown coat. The Old Man gasped for breath for many minutes but finally recovered.
“Oh, thank you sir for saving me! I surely would have drowned if not for you. I must show my gratitude. I will give you the most valuable thing I own.” And with that, he reached into the large pocket of his tattered coat and pulled out a small bundle. It was draped in red silk
and tied with a golden string.
With much flourish, he handed it to the Young Man. The Young Man almost dropped it, remarking on its weight in relationship to its size. “Goodness,” he stammered and then he thought, “what great weight for such a small box and it is wrapped in red silk and tied with a golden cord.
It is his most valuable thing he owns. It is so small, yet so heavy. It must be... GOLD!”
