Page 5 - Ugly Unicorn
P. 5
We talked about what it was like to be among the few remaining truly wild horses. After all, they had no human masters and did not have to work herding cattle. However, when it got cold and rainy, they did not have a barn to go into and no one to give them oats or apples. The wild horses however, thought that their lives were pretty good and didn’t want to trade with their domesticated cousins.
“After all,” the leader of the wild horses said, “Long ago, all horses lived just as we do now.” And thus began his story about ancient horses and the unicorns.
“Long ago, there were not many horses. They all lived in one area of the world, across the great ocean. This was before there were many humans and none lived in this part of the world. All the horses lived together in a large herd and were just as wild as we are now. There were black horses like me and browns and grays and oh yes ... the unicorns.”
“Stop!” I yelled, “What do you mean unicorns? Were they a separate breed of horse or a different animal altogether?”
“Oh no,” the leader explained, “Unicorns are just horses like the rest of us, only they are ugly.” “I see,” I replied, “They were an ugly color or had a misshaped tail or something
like that.”
