“No, no,” he said, “They looked just like the rest of us. In fact, some were quite beautiful. It was not that they looked ugly; they acted ugly.”
Now I can tell you that I was getting mighty confused. I have been around a lot of horses and they usually act nice to each other and don’t hold a grudge and things like that. So, I asked the leader to explain what he meant by “acted ugly.”
Now, all the rest of the herd gathered as the leader told me the rest of the story. “You see, by nature, horses like to get along with each other. We have our disagreements and sometimes we make ourselves angry but we get over it. We don’t try to hurt each other by saying mean things about each other. It has been that way forever, even in those ancient times.”
“But, every now and then, there would be a horse who was different. He or she seemed to always have something negative to say about the other horses. Maybe they would criticize the other horse’s color. Or, they might make fun of how another horse would run.
If a horse would make a mistake or not do something they were supposed to do, these “ugly” horses would make fun of them and tell all the other horses about the mistake.”
I remarked that this did not seem very “horse like.”
