Page 7 - Ugly Unicorn

“No,” replied the leader, “It was not very horse like and the other horse would tell them so. This 'being ugly to others stuff' usually started when the horse was young. And if they kept it up, they would grow a bump right in the middle of their forehead. If they quit being ugly, the bump would go away. But if the horse kept being ugly and often they did, the bump would grow and grow and eventually become
a horn.”
“A unicorn,” I said with amazement. “Yes,” said the leader, “a unicorn.”
“Now, this horn growing took a long time. And if they stopped being ugly, then it would stop growing and gradually go away. But if they kept being ugly until the horn reached its full length, then you could be sure that the horse, now unicorn, would always be ugly to others.”
I was still a little confused, so I asked the leader to explain a little more about how the unicorns behaved.
“Well,” he began, “Do you know what gossip is?” I told him, “Not really.” “Gossip is when you tell others something about another which is hurtful. Gossip can be an untruth or it can be the truth. But the purpose in telling it is to make another look bad or foolish to those with whom you are gossiping.”
