The leader continued. “Gossiping is designed to make you look better or more important and make others look worse. It is a very mean thing to do and unicorns were masters at it.” “How so?” I asked.
“They always seemed to find others who would listen and they came up with stuff that others found interesting or funny or shocking.
All the while, they would say things like ‘I was just telling the truth,’ or ‘well that is just how it happened,’ or ‘it is not my fault that they did something so stupid.’
Those horses who eventually became unicorns never took responsibility for their behavior. They were never concerned about the hurt that they were causing others.” I remarked, “They didn’t seem very nice.”
“Well, that is one thing that the ancient horses found so interesting,” said the leader.
“Much of the time they were very pleasant to be around. They did not gossip or tell hurtful things all the time. It was as if they were compelled to be hurtful when they needed attention from others.
