“Why would Squiggy want to hurt us?” asked another. Red Tail replied, “I’m not sure but maybe as a yearling he thinks that if a lot of the elders starve over the winter, he can become the chief.” This brought some angry grunts from the others. “This is a terrible thing he is trying to do to us,” said someone from the audience.
In a tree on the far end of the colony another group of squirrels was also discussing Squiggy’s refusal to participate in the festival. Suddenly Fuzzy Tail stood up and said, “I know why Squiggy is not going to eat the chocolate with the rest of us. Haven’t you noticed that patch of white hair above his eye?” The others nodded but look confused.
“Don’t you see,” said Fuzzy Tail. “Hawks have white hooded heads and Squiggy is light colored. He has, ‘The mark of the Hawk’. He won’t participate in the festival because he is going to tell the hawks when we have our field party and they will swoop down and catch us.”
The whole group gasped at the thought of countless hawks swooping down from the sky just as they began the big celebration at the sacred diamond shaped field.
