Page 7 - SB-Collard Green Garden
P. 7

She ran to the back door and flung it open in a rush to get to the back yard. And sure enough, there was a garden. A large fenced garden with row after row of ...Collard Greens!
You could tell that the garden had not always been only collard greens because you could see the dried stalks of corn and okra standing tall in several rows. But now as she walked down row after row of untended garden, there was nothing but collard greens. Not knowing what else to do, the young girl picked a “mess” of collard greens and brought them into the house. She washed and cleaned them and with a little salt and pepper, cooked herself a supper of collard greens.
The next morning she checked the cupboards again but they were still bare. She pulled her chair to the table and with a rather long face, ate a bowl of cold, left over collard greens for breakfast. “This will never do,” she said to herself. “I need more than collard greens to eat.”
So she went into the back yard and thought about all the other farms and how they had gardens with tomatoes and watermelons. These thoughts made her feel much better. She walked into the garden and began to talk out loud to herself. “Yes, I will dig up this garden and I will plant a row of tomatoes along the fence and four rows of peas by the big oak tree. I will plant melons along the edge of this garden and have plenty to eat.”
