care needs to be taken when space heaters or fireplaces are used. Never place a space heater within three feet of any combustible materials. Also, do not plug a heater into an extension cord or use electric heaters or appliances which have any signs of cracking or stiffness of the power cord.
After the cold weather rolls into springtime we will continue to see fewer heater related fires, but we must keep fire safety in the foreground because each season brings with it a specific and changing set of fire risks. We will be boiling crawfish and grilling into the summer.
Most of our homes have a combination of hardwired and battery powered smoke detectors. Likewise, most of our homes should probably have the smoke detectors replaced with the newer lithium ion battery powered units. The lifespan of a detector is 10 to 12 years, and the newer power sources last about that long. So instead of replacing batteries, we will simply replace the entire unit at a cost less than that of 10 years worth of 9 volt alkaline batteries.
Stay alert to fire dangers throughout the year and keep yourself and your family safe.
