Curling, like golf, originated in Scotland.
For those who either didn’t watch or weren’t enamored enough to pay attention, curling involves two teams of four members each who alternately slide a 42# polished granite stone over 100 feet toward a target of concentric circles (the largest of which is 12 feet in diameter) knocking opponent’s stones from while trying to place their own nearest the center of the target. It’s sort of like a mix of shuffleboard, horseshoes and billiards on ice.
While the stone is sliding, team members are feverishly sweeping a path to momentarily melt the ice in front of the stone, even further reducing friction, thereby guiding the stone to curve or curl.
Each team flails 8 stones in an end (like an inning) with 10 ends per game.
It’s not hard to understand that world-class curlers are from colder climates. The USA team hails from Duluth, MN. I was surprised to find that a curling club is being formed in New Orleans, and that only Alabama, Arkansas and West Virginia have no organized curling. I was dumbfounded to think of curling in Hawaii. But, I guess a lot of military folks stationed there are probably from the frozen North.
