Because Howard always had an excuse why he shouldn’t have to do anything he did not want to do, he lost something very important. What he lost is one of the most valuable things in the animal world and also in yours.
Howard lost the Trust of the others. People will trust you if when you say you will do something, you do it. People will trust you if they know that when you give your word, you will do it even if it is inconvenient, not fun or difficult.
If you are too concerned about getting what you want, even if it makes things difficult for others, you will find others unwilling to help you. You humans are much like many other animals in that you are very social.
Being social means helping each other, even when you would rather be doing something else. It is a quality that has helped humans to do so well in the world. But when it came time to gather nuts, even the sociable squirrels would not help Howard because he was not willing to help them.
