The parrot who had won then spoke up. “Polly, you are correct that it does not grow in our jungle but I found it here. It was on the dirt road and may have fallen from a truck going to market. The contest is about finding the most appealing fruit and because we had never seen it before, I hoped that would make it appealing.”
Polly then said, “So you admit that you cheated and I should have won.” “I never said I cheated. I was just agreeing that it does not grow in our jungle,” replied the winner. “Cheater, cheater, pineapple eater,” whined Polly. “The prize should be mine.”
Just then one of the judges spoke up, “Polly, the winner brought us the most appealing fruit. Whether it grows in our jungle or not is not important. What is important is how you play the contest and accept the results and unfortunately, you are not doing a very good job of that.”
Then he said in a kind tone, “Polly, even if we did not have this fruit, you may not have won.”
On the final day of the festival, they held the “most appealing parrot” contest. All morning long the parrots preened themselves, making sure every feather was in place. As they did so, the judges flew from branch to branch, inspecting and visiting with the various contestants.
