Page 24 - The CRAIG family
P. 24
When Colmore and Lora married, Lora had 4 living children: Bertha May; Florence “Flora” Belle; Flossie; and Mabel Edith. All the girls were married and out of the home when Colmore and Lora married in 1916.
Lora gave birth to Mildred Fay Craig on December 6, 1917. Colmore was 60 years old and Lora was 43.
In 1920 census Colmore and Lora lived in Utica with their daughter 2-1/2-year-old Mildred. Data shows that Colmore was a farmer and that he owned his home (farm) free and clear
In the 1930 Census, Colmore and Lora are living in Watson in a home that was owned by Garfield Sparks. The household included Colmore, Lora, and their daughter Mildred, granddaughter Helen Sparks, Gin, Ed, Craig and George Craig. After Lora died January 1, 1936, Colmore went to live with Aunt Mildred and Uncle Newt.
Children:
Children of Lora and Jeremiah Courtney: Aunt Mildred stepsisters, Daddy and his brothers and sisters knew them just as their Aunts and Uncles. Daddy always said the Sparks and the Cannons were related to us, but he never really understood HOW they were related. I was at the Silver Creek Alumni dinner in June of this year (2018) and a woman came up to me and introduced herself and said we were cousins – she had formerly been a Cannon. Apparently, her Cannon side of the family, although we are not blood related, also consider the Craig as family.
True Story – When my husband to be, Eddie Scafidi, met Grandma Adams and we were talking about Aunt Maggie, Uncle Elmer and Aunt Goldie Scifres, Uncle Homer Adams, etc., he asked how we were related and when Grandma and me tried to explain, his comment was “Sounds like you all are a bunch of orphans that got together and made a family”. Guess that is kind of true but oh what a loving family we had.
Bertha May – Born 2/2/1890 and died 3/12/1955
Bertha married Rutherford “Garfield” Sparks on February 15, 1911. Garfield was married to Pearl Craig (Colmore and Nancy’s daughter) so he was Colmore’s widowed son-in-law when he married Bertha, who later became Colmore’s step-daughter. Garfield and Bertha raised he and Pearl’s 2 children, Helen and Alvah. Bertha and Garfield had 2 children, Gerald and Mildred Irene.
Garfield died of Cardiac Failure on November27, 1943. Bertha had battled cancer for 7 years but died 2 months after the cancer metastasized to her lungs. She had been a patient at St. Edwards hospital in New Albany for 12 days when she died March 12, 1955. She was 65 years old.
