José Paulo – Ideal Decision
THE THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE
My bedside book states the phrase “Fools despise wisdom and
instruction” in one of its chapters. Nothing can be more valuable
to men than knowledge, and adding knowledge to discipline, the
result will be none other than success.
I have always had a thirst for knowledge, and when I say know-
ledge, I do not mean the one you get inside of schools and uni-
versities only, I mean something transcending. I made thirst for
knowledge a habit, at all times I am on the look out to learn
something new.
Using what you already know and limit yourself to it is a com-
fortable behavior for the human being, it is natural, because most
people believe that seeking knowledge is complicated and expen-
sive. That is a big mistake. Every day we learn something new, my
only fear is to believe in a lie; but, on the other hand, the more
knowledge I have, the more the lies are far from me and my career.
After all, knowledge brings a valuable asset called “discernment”,
but we will talk about it later.
A great lesson in knowledge and discipline for me was when I
decided to take the university entrance exam. I let my whole family
know that, for a while, I would focus on studying. I locked myself
in the room for a long journey and my mother even left food out-
side my bedroom door. Yes, that is true. It may sound crazy, but
we must relinquish many things for a passion.
I stayed there for dozens of days immersed in books and, as
time went by and my bear grew, the knowledge also multiplied.
