SLIDING FIGURE OF EIGHT BEND
Purpose
This is a strong bend for the largest ropes, although it can also be used on
smaller cordage. It is preferable to the fisherman’s knot (pages 34–35) when
ease of untying after use is a desirable characteristic.
Tying
Marry the two lines to be joined, parallel and close together, with ends in
opposite directions. Then tie a figure of eight knot in one end and introduce the
other end (figure 1). Tie a second identical figure of eight knot with the other end
around its nearby standing part (figures 2–3). Tighten both knots and then pull
them together (figure 4).
Knot lore
The older name for this knot was Flemish bend.
