(Heather McLeay—The Knots Puzzle Book, 1994)

The selection of knots that follows has been chosen to challenge and inspire all

who are keen to add more knots to their repertoire. Some, such as the carrick
bend, are straightforward working knots. Others, like the braid knot and the

square knot, are just as practical but add a touch of decoration wherever they are
tied; for, while all knots have their uses, many happen to be ornamental too. A

few (including the frustrator and the Lapp knot) are either new or virtually
unknown, while the Chinese cloverleaf and the T-shaped Turk’s head are isolated

representatives of large and complex knot families.
