Message from the President
I am excited and privileged to assume the position of Nassau County Dental
Society President. I have been a dentist for 55 years and have had the
opportunity to see many positive changes in our profession and many missed
opportunities. Dentistry is a difficult profession. Sometimes it is extremely
rewarding and at other times it is extremely frustrating. Stop for a moment
and think about patients whose teeth you have successfully restored and
significantly improved their lives. How did this make you feel?
It troubles me to see retail stores advertising “make your own denture” for
$39 or orthodontic treatment without x-rays or a dentist present. It troubles
me when insurance companies are rating dental practices, not on the quality
of the treatment they produce, but on some financial statistics analyzed by a non-dentist.
What do we do to value the knowledge and skills that we as dentists have worked hard to achieve. If we
spend each day in a small room with the pressures of modern-day dental practice, how will we feel
rewarded? For me, personally it has been my involvement in organized dentistry, where I have the
opportunity to learn new techniques, share information with colleagues and enjoy social events with other
dentists.
The Nassau County Dental Society offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a night out with other dentists. Four
times each year we meet at a venue for hors d’oeuvres, dinner, a lecture, and a night out with other
members. The amazing part is this is included with your membership. Our courses also offer an opportunity
to meet and exchange ideas with other members. Take a moment to visit our website and check out our
many free and exciting courses that are available to members.
This year we are starting our new Mentorship Program. This is a wonderful opportunity for you if you are an
established practitioner and want to experience the gratifying feeling of helping a new dentist. If you are a
new dentist this is a wonderful opportunity to learn the skills needed to manage a practice.
On September 10 will be partnering with the Oral Cancer Foundation for a 5K walk/run at Bethpage State
Park. Place a sign in your office, bring your staff and patients and participate in a fun afternoon. Together,
we can make a difference. If you have not participated in a society event, this is a wonderful opportunity to
get involved.
I look forward to seeing each of you at the Greater Long Island Dental Meeting on April 25 and April 26 at
the Huntington Hilton.
As Mike Ditka said, “Success is about taking advantage of opportunity.”
