This course is open to Juniors and Seniors and will prepare students interested in the healthcare field for
healthcare programs at the advanced level (i.e. nursing, medical assisting, surgical technology, occupational or
physical therapy, radiology, dental assistants, and other allied health professions). Many colleges/two-year
programs require a biomedical terminology course as a prerequisite to admission to such programs. With an
opportunity to earn dual credit for a comprehensive biomedical terminology course and overview of health science
pathways and careers, this program can be a head start. As an added benefit, you will learn basic healthcare skills
too. Medical terminology will focus on anatomy, abbreviations, procedures, medical conditions and treatments.
Focus will be learning in a creative environment through 3D projects, games, and learning labs. Students will also
begin to apply medical terminology with an introduction to nutrition, and overview of healthcare careers. Students
will reinforce this learning through field trips, guest speakers, and community service projects. These projects will
be specialized to students’ future career interests. Excellent attendance is essential for success in this program.
Full year students will be eligible for 7 dual credits; students graduating early will only be eligible for 3 dual
credits. Students wishing to continue into semester 2 must complete Medical Terminology 1 with a grade of “C” or
better.
