My Time As Treasurer
W.Bro Peter Elmont (aka Peewee) was appointed Provincial
Grand Treasurer in 2009, taking over from W.Bro Peter
Roworth, who had served the Province well for many years.
rd
Peter was born in Windsor on 23 May 1950 and attended
St George’s school in Mill Hill until his father died in 1955,
when the family moved to Bristol. This proved to be Peter’s
first contact with Freemasonry, but he didn’t realise it.
Peter’s father was in Kingswood School Lodge in
Clerkenwell and had reached the position of Warden when
he died. The Lodge Almoner, Norman Binns, arranged for
Peter to go to Redland Hill House School in Bristol until he was old enough to go to
the Royal Masonic School at 9 years of age. (Peter’s brother, John, being 4 years
older had gone straight to the Masonic School). Peter left the Masonic School in
1968 with a good collection of ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels and began training as an
accountant. He joined the local paper as Company Secretary and then moved onto
the NHS, ending up as Deputy Director of Finance in North Somerset PCT retiring in
2013.
In 1976 he married Bridget, one of the better decisions in his life.
He joined King Alfred Lodge in 1979, becoming Master in 1991. In 1997 he was
appointed PrSGD and was later promoted to PPrGSuptWks, then PrJGW and
PPrGSuptWks. He was honoured with Grand Rank (PAGDC) in 2012.
He joined Mark in Else Lodge in 1996, becoming Master in 2003, was promoted to
PPrIOW in 2006 and PPrGJW in 2008, then Treasurer in 2009. In 2010, he was
appointed PAGDC and in 2016 PGSD. He is also a member of Nailsea RAM and a
member of Inkerman Chapter.
Peter says;
I enjoy walking and gardening, but my main volunteering role is working for the RNLI
in Weston-super-Mare. Having joined as Auditor 26 years ago, by a due process of
not being able to say ‘No’ became Chairman of the Local fundraising Branch. Over
the last 8 years we have been raising funds for a new Lifeboat Station as we have
had to leave Birnbeck Pier due its poor state of repair. We have managed to raise
over £850,000 since then. Much to my surprise and honour I was awarded The
British Empire Medal in the 2021 new years’ honours list.
This September (2021) I shall be handing over to W.Bro Keith Surry. I have enjoyed
my time as Treasurer enjoying the Friendship and support of all the Somerset Mark
Brethren, I am sure you will give him the same support as you have given me.
