helping others
by MONICA MALLON
Sophomores help the old and young on their class retreat.
The sophomores volunteered for community service at two schools and an assisted living center on their retreat. Retreats are a time for students to have fun with their friends while helping others. “Without community service, we couldn't see how much others need us and how much we need them. Lending a hand means taking the time to reach out to those who can't come to us. It's about time we got off of our butts and saw more of the world than from where we are sitting,“ said Paulette Ma (10), who greatly enjoyed the time that she spent volunteering at the assisted living center, helping elderly members of the community. However, though most students had good experiences with community service, some were wary. Pieter Henkens (10) noted, “I went to Ormondale. It was
somewhat enjoyable but also kind of awkward.”
After the community service was over the sophomores went to Hidden Villa retreat center. There they had the opportunity to bond with people they usually don't interact with at school. Rachel Cochran (10) said “I enjoyed that this year we were able to experience our retreat at a farm. Hidden Villa is a place dedicated to other beings, which I care very much about. To wander through it with the people I enjoy was a true delight”. During the candle ceremony, many sophomores expressed their love and gratitude to the members of the class. In that touching moment, the class's strong bond was fully realized.
