The girls' tennis team was faced with redefining their team dynamic.
The Priory girls' tennis team has always been
close. However, with the recruitment of six new members, it was time to reforge some bonds and make sure that the team emerged better and stronger than ever. This year, Delara Fotovatjah (9), Miranda Yan (9), Candy Yin (10), Valerie Filloux (9), Jacey Reed (9) and Claudia Tamer (9), as the new members of the team, faced a unique challenge in trying to find their places on a team that had been together for years.
After several weeks of practice and games, the girls were getting along well. Delara Fotovatjah (9) said, “My new friends are funny and cute. And I also met some sophomores who love to tell jokes.” As a freshman, Fotovatjah brought a new perspective to the team. Said veteran Amanda Lee (12), “It's great that the team is closer this year. We are just like a family. Everyone hangs out with each other.”
The girls also enjoyed trying new things on the court. Milla Bevens (11) said, “Every day I attended practice, I was positive that my skills improved with my coaches' instruction. The feeling of exponential growth in my skills is a satisfying feeling.”
Her teammates agreed. “I started to play singles this year,” said Mary Jin (12) of her tennis developments this season. “It gives me more stress, but it also allows a better vision of what's happening on the court and more space to maneuver.”
Though they had to create an entirely new team dynamic, the girls' tennis team did a phenomenal job of reinventing their connections and community. By the end of the season, friendships had been forged between a variety of girls, regardless of age, grade, or ability. As Fotovatjah summarized, “It's all just so much fun!”
1. Delara Fotovajah (9) is never exhausted, swinging her hardest at a ball that one of the coaches passes during practice. 3. Sunglasses are perfect for keeping the sun out of Milla Beens' (11) eyes as she slams the ball across the court. 4. Mary Jin (12) prepares to return a ball during the last game of the season.
