Retreats are a core activity at Priory based on Benedictine values. The retreat events help strengthen community while fostering individuality, centering on spirituality, building one’s hospitality and focusing on integrity. The work that goes into creating a successful retreat is made possible from the collective efforts of Ms. Buccola, the retreat leaders and the students attending the retreat. Yuri Morales (10) said that, “being a retreat leader has empowered me by showing me the different perspectives each student has on each of the Benedictine values and how it impacts them in their daily lives. It has also taught me the importance of building relations with members outside of her grade.”
Each retreat leader attends retreats during the year and helps to guide students during the retreat as well as prepare beforehand. Anna Brett (12) talked about her time as a retreat leader and how it “has taught me how to
be a leader and look out for others.” For example, the junior retreat into the city took a lot of preparation and once one the retreat it’s “go go go”. In January, the junior class embarked on their class retreat in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, volunteering with an array of different organizations. After the experience, John Sheng (12) reflected on his retreat by saying “Growing up in an environment where religious practice is hard to see, [he] had never seen a vivid example of how it is able to truly provide people with tangible help.” While the junior retreat is an eye opening experience for many, each grade builds connections among other grades in the process. Retreats range from outdoor activities, such as hiking, and volunteering, to multi- day experiences held throughout the year. Retreats bring classmates together, and allow one to find their individual identity in a supportive environment.
