A few years ago, Priory began pairing Seniors and sixth graders, calling the pairs “Panther Pals”. This has grownintoaschooltradition.Funactivitiesareplannedfor the Panther Pals to do together, such as karaoke, pizza lunches,andicebreakergames.Notonlydoesthisprovide a source of fun for members of the program, it allows seniors to serve as mentors for the sixth graders. This bridges the gap between the far upper- and lower- classmen,becauseotherwisethesegroupswouldlikelynot interact.
Hanging out with seniors not only boosts the confidence of the sixth graders, it gives them a glimpse into the future. Seniors can provide their Panther Pals with adviceand(hopefully)wisdomastheygrow.Becausemost seniors have been at Priory for 4 or even 7 years, they can help the new students adjust and learn about Priory.
Not only can the seniors help the sixth graders, but the sixth graders can help the seniors. Senior classrepresentativeAnnaBrettsays,“Ilikehaving panther pals because it gives us seniors a sense of responsibilitythatweneedtolearnbeforegoingto college”. Mentoring the sixth graders definitely gives the seniors a sense of responsibility, because they have to be their role models. Additionally, it is an odd glimpseintothepast-weretheseniorseverreally that small?!
Finally, Panther Pals also provide a source of unlikely friendship. When asked for a quote that relates to the program, sixth grader Donya Fotovatjah said,“Goodfriendsarelikestars,youdon'talways see them but you know they are always there”. Even when the seniors graduate, they'll always be there for their panther pals.
