Virtual Lab Session: Exploring online resources to under-
stand Regulatory RNAs

In the recent years, three lines of evidence have converged on
lncRNAs, showing them to be major players in several neurodevelopmental
disorders. Firstly, GWAS studies have revealed polymorphisms associated with
disease in regions of the genome that have little protein coding potential. Further,
lncRNAs are found to be differentially expressed in patient derived samples.
Lastly, many well characterized protein coding genes arise from genomic loci that
have non-coding RNAs expressed in their vicinity and could potentially regulate the
expression of important genes. Having zoomed into a genomic region of interest,
the heterogeneity of the transcripts expressed from the region can be over-
whelming. Systematic studies bringing together experimental detection and
mining of publicly available datasets can be used to identify the relevant non-
coding RNAs and develop hypothesis on their functions. Using selected genomic
loci, the participants will be introduced to the methods that allow detailed
characterization of transcripts arising from a genomic locus
