And so, there he was, on the substitute’s bench in the
great Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro. On the terraces
the Brazilian flags were flying high: Progress and Order**
each flag dressed in gold and green. The National anthem
struck up and the band played at full blast. Hand on heart
he sung with all his might.
E ele está lá, no banco dos reservas, no estádio do
Maracanã, no Rio de Janeiro. Nas varandas, as bandeiras
do Brasil acenam. “Ordem e Progresso”*, dizem as
bandeiras verdes e amarelas. O hino nacional começa e a
banda toca bem alto. E com a mão no coração, Zelé canta
com toda sua força.
