SOUTHFIELD
LETTER FROM
A LOWER SIXTH
Dear Future Southfield Sister,
Welcome to Southfield, easily the best house at Millfield! While boarding may seem like a
daunting experience, I assure you everyone here at Southfield will help you settle in and
ensure you have the best time. Southfield gives you the opportunity to forge relationships
with girls from Year 10 through to Upper Sixth, all of whom have vastly different
backgrounds. These friendships will prove useful in the evenings when you can talk to each
other about your day over a bowl of Frosties or chocolate spread on toast (after you’ve done
your prep, of course).
Southfield has some incredible staff who keep the house running: Mrs Kellow will chat to
you about anything and everything (with her dogs sat by faithfully by her side), Jilly and
Luke Pearson-Taylor Lucy will help you with almost any task you would normally go to your parents about (both
have a history of helping many girls find lost items), if you’re nice enough, they might put
out chocolate muffins after school - you have to be quick to get one though!
Throughout the year, the school will put on many house events from netball and swimming
to debating and maths, ensuring that every Southfield star has a time to shine. These events
are highly anticipated and enjoyed by all in Southfield, not only because we dominate these
events, but because it gives you the opportunity to cover yourself in face paint and spend
time with your friends.
While the week at school can be quite full-on, you can rest assured knowing that on Friday
night you can go to Sainsburys to restock your room with your essential snacks, or go to
McDonalds to indulge in some of your favourite fast food meals, although you have to be
prepared on Friday morning to sign up for your place, competition is fierce in Southfield!
Sundays are by far the best day at school, with the dining hall offering all the popular
brunch foods like hash browns (a personal favourite), pain au chocolat, fresh fruit and more.
Sundays are left empty to allow students to relax in their own way, most choose to spend
the day in Clarks Village, while others like to catch up on their favourite TV shows, both
routines are justified.
While starting boarding is scary, everyone at Southfield is more than happy to help you
settle in and lend a listening ear for when you get homesick. Some top tips from a veteran
boarder: bring little knick knacks from home so you can decorate your room in your own
style, throw yourself into house life as well as school life and remember that you are not
alone, everyone in house has gone through or is going through a similar journey in boarding,
so don’t be afraid to talk to someone!
I hope this provides you with a little more insight into life at Southfield and eases your
nerves before you arrive at school in September. I know you will adore Southfield and will
be begging to come back once you’ve left - you’re always welcome back at Southfield!
