BTEC FIRST AWARD IN MUSIC
OPTION OPTION
COURSE CONTENT The BTEC First Award in Music course enables students to prepare for work
opportunities or further education. It will give students an introduction to a number
of roles available in the world of modern music and media business, and at Millfield
a Level 3 qualification is offered in the Sixth Form. Students will complete four
units, all weighted at 25% of the overall qualification. These include an exam linked
to the music industry, as well as three internally assessed units that explore
managing a music product, introducing music composition, and introducing music
performance.
APPROACH TO TEACHING Each unit has a teaching and learning phase followed by assessment. The delivery of
AND LEARNING the course is largely practical and offers opportunities to make recordings, stage
events and to work with the latest music technology. Educational visits and input
from outside experts contribute to a stimulating and enjoyable two-year
programme. During the course they will prepare for assignments through largely
practical activities. In particular, they will develop creative and technical
performance skills. They will use Logic software on our Mac computers, as well as
the application of their own instrumental and/or vocal skills. In the second year of
the course they will have the opportunity to plan, develop and deliver an exciting
music event for the Millfield community.
BTEC Music is a subject that requires students to enjoy playing an instrument, being
creative, and realising ideas connected to the music industry. They will need to be
reliable and be able to work independently, as well as having good time managing
and organisational skills.
ASSESSMENT This course is assessed through three internally based components, using the
following grades: pass, merit, distinction, distinction*. There is an opportunity, when
given, for students to resubmit their work to attempt a higher grade. The final
component is an external examination which allows students one retake
opportunity if required.
FURTHER INFORMATION All students will be expected to have vocal or instrumental lessons that they attend
regularly each week. An ability to read music will be an advantage, but not
compulsory. Students may use their own laptop and music software for creative
work if they prefer.
